Your Cat’s Health: The Importance of Vaccinations

As people who are passionate about supporting pet families, we want to highlight the
importance of regular veterinary care for cats. Often seen as self-sufficient creatures,
cats still need preventive care to stay healthy. Vaccinations are a critical part of this
care, Helping ensure your feline friend lives a long and happy life.

Cat Vaccinations: Guarding Against Bacteria and Infections

Cats, regardless of their indoor or outdoor status, encounter various bacteria and
viruses that can cause serious illnesses. Vaccines help prepare your cat’s immune
system to fight these threats. Once vaccinated, your cat is better equipped to either
avoid infections altogether or recover quickly if exposed. Vaccinating your cat early and
on schedule provides the best protection.

The Importance of Rabies Protection

Rabies is a life-threatening disease that cats can contract from wildlife such as bats,
coyotes, raccoons, and skunks. Even indoor cats are at risk, as they can escape or
wildlife can find a way into your home. While rabies is preventable, there is no cure –
this vaccine is legally required for all dogs and cats in Nebraska. Visit your PetPage or
Call, we’re happy to discuss how to best protect your cat, and you, from this deadly
disease.

Customized for Your Cat’s Lifestyle

Our dedicated veterinarians personalize vaccination plans based on your cat’s lifestyle.
Indoor cats and outdoor cats have different vaccination needs. Most cats will need core
vaccines for common illnesses like rabies, feline distemper and rhinotracheitis. Outdoor
cats may require additional shots like feline leukemia as part of their core vaccine plan.
Your vet will create a plan that best fits your family’s health needs.

FAQ with Dr. Anderson: Common Cat Vaccine Questions

“Combo Vaccines” – Why does Ralston Vet give cats vaccines that protect against
multiple diseases all in 1 shot? Is it safe?
– Many vaccines we give protect against multiple health threats, for cats they can also be referred to as 3-way or 3-in-1 vaccines. When we give a “combo” shot, it’s fewer pokes for your kitty which means less stress and happier visits. Most cats don’t love coming in, let’s make it as easy for every family as possible. We carefully choose our vaccines and sources for their safety and effectiveness, we even have special vaccine fridges in clinic to ensure they’re stored and handled appropriately. And, we work with each family to make personalized vaccine plans – some cats have special needs.

“Early Vaccines” – When do you start vaccinating cats? – Your cat should be vaccinated as soon as possible to keep them healthy, kittens need several series or booster shots of their core vaccines to be fully protected from infections and disease. We usually recommend kittens begin their first vaccine series when they’re 6-8 weeks old and continue on schedule until fully vaccinated which could be 3-4 months old. Adult cats also need regular vaccine boosters to maintain their immunity, it’s never too late to begin a vaccination schedule for an older cat. Age isn’t a disease, personalized vaccine plans and maintaining immunity are just as important for senior cats as they are for kittens, healthy lives at every age.

“Home Cat Vaccines” – Can I vaccinate my own cat? – I don’t recommend it, period. It might seem convenient to let your cat skip the visit, it’s risky. When a vaccine doesn’t come from your vet, it’s hard to know if it was shipped and stored correctly or if it’s coming from a 3 rd party where the manufacturer may no longer guarantee the effectiveness. Really, a vaccine visit is about the nose-to-tail exam and acting proactively to keep your cat happy and healthy. I want cats and their people to have the best quality of life together as long as possible.
