Tips for Raising Kids & Pets Together Safely

Because Pets Are Family, From Day One

There’s something magical about watching your child and your pet grow up together. Whether you’re introducing a new puppy to your small kids, welcoming a rescue dog into a busy household, or just adding a second pet, the bond between kids and pets is one of life’s most meaningful relationships. At Ralston Vet, we believe that raising kids and pets together can be joyful, healthy, and safe, with a little planning and a lot of love.

Why Pets and Kids Are a Great Match

The benefits of growing up with pets are well-documented. Studies show that children who live with animals are more likely to develop empathy, responsibility, and resilience. Pets provide companionship, emotional support, and a sense of security, especially during times of change. And yes, those adorable photo ops don’t hurt, either.

But it’s not just about snuggles. Pets also support healthy immune system development in young children, help regulate stress, and even encourage physical activity. With the right foundation, your pet becomes a playmate, protector, and constant companion for your child, and a source of comfort for the whole family.

Start with Safety: Tips for a Healthy Household

Just like kids, pets thrive on consistency, routine, and positive reinforcement. A few proactive steps can help prevent common stressors and ensure your household runs smoothly:

  • Supervise interactions. Even the gentlest pets and most confident kids can misread each other’s cues. Always supervise young children during pet playtime, feeding, and downtime.
  • Set up a “safe zone.” Create a quiet space your pet can retreat to, like a crate, cozy bed, or a room your pet can access but kids can’t.  Allowing kids and pets safe zones to take a break, especially during high-energy play or when guests visit, can help prevent overwhelm or accidental nips.
  • Teach gentle hands and together time. You don’t need to keep kids and pets completely separate. Encourage kids to use calm voices and soft touches when petting. Model respectful behavior and explain what your pets do and don’t enjoy.  Shared activities like reading to your pet, helping fill water bowls, or offering a treat can build confidence and bond.
  • Watch for warning signs. Yawning, lip licking, hiding, or growling are signs your pet may be overwhelmed. Step in early to reduce stress and prevent fear-based behavior.
  • Keep toys separate. Pet toys and kid toys often look similar. Keeping them in different areas helps avoid accidental guarding or confusion.

Health & Hygiene: Keeping Everyone Safe

Pets and kids can absolutely coexist safely, but like any good partnership, they need the right support. At Ralston Vet, we recommend:

  • Routine wellness care and vaccines to reduce the risk of zoonotic disease (can pass between animals and people) like Rabies and Leptospirosis.
  • Year-round parasite prevention and routine fecal testing to help catch and control internal and external parasites (like roundworms, hookworms, and fleas) that can spread to people, especially in puppies and kittens who are still learning the ropes.
  • Handwashing after pet handling (and before snack time!) as a simple, effective hygiene habit for kids.

And if your pet is showing new signs of stress, like hiding, growling, house-soiling, or unusual clinginess, please reach out. Our team can connect you with behavior support, share helpful handouts or videos, or schedule a consult with one of our doctors. You’re not alone, and asking for help doesn’t make you a bad pet parent. It makes you a proactive one.

Small Kids, Big Learning Moments

Young children naturally learn by doing, and there’s a lot to be learned from living with a pet. From filling water bowls to helping brush fur, age-appropriate pet care tasks help kids build confidence and compassion.

Start small:

  • Let your child be the “treat giver” during training.
  • Invite them to help brush or bathe your pet (with guidance).
  • Create a pet chore chart for simple daily or weekly tasks.

These early interactions build respectful habits that benefit your child and your pet for years to come.
